ICE must be Reformed or Disbanded Now!

To: Sen. Grassley, Sen. Ernst, Rep. Nunn

From: A constituent in Des Moines, IA

June 5

I am writing as your constituent to demand immediate action to hold Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) accountable to the ethical standards expected of any law enforcement agency operating in a constitutional democracy. Recent reports confirm that ICE agents have conducted public operations while masked, in plain clothes, and without identifying themselves. These tactics—used in neighborhoods, workplaces, and even homes—are a gross violation of democratic norms. They create fear, not safety. They intimidate, not serve. They erode public trust and mirror the behavior of authoritarian secret police—not accountable American officers sworn to uphold the law. You have a constitutional duty to protect your constituents from the abuse of power. That includes ensuring that every federal agency—especially one with the power to detain and deport—is operating transparently, lawfully, and with full accountability to the public. I demand that you take immediate legislative action to: 1 Mandate that ICE agents identify themselves clearly by name, badge number, and agency affiliation. 2 Require that ICE agents wear standard uniforms during all public operations. 3 Prohibit ICE agents from wearing face coverings that obscure identity during non-emergency interactions. 4 Establish independent public audits of ICE activity, with oversight from civil rights organizations. If ICE is unwilling or unable to operate within the ethical standards that apply to all law enforcement agencies, then it must be reformed or disbanded. No agency that wields this much power should be allowed to act with secrecy, impunity, or without public accountability. Let me be clear: ICE is not making our communities safer—it is terrorizing them. It is operating as a tool of intimidation, not justice. Families are living in fear, civil liberties are being eroded, and public faith in government is collapsing. If you stay silent, you are endorsing these abuses. Refusing to act is a choice. You were not elected to be neutral in the face of injustice—you were elected to protect the people who put you in office. I urge you to take a public stand now—demand transparency, end secret police tactics, and protect the rights of the people you were elected to serve.
