I am writing because the latest reporting about DOGE’s activities inside the Social Security Administration is absolutely unacceptable, and I am demanding that Congress stop standing by while this administration dismantles accountability, undermines federal agencies, and jeopardizes the trust Americans place in their government. Recent reporting from FedScoop details Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse and Ron Wyden’s continued attempts to obtain answers from SSA Commissioner Frank Bisignano regarding DOGE’s activities at the agency. According to the senators, the responses they received were either inadequate or later contradicted by SSA’s own admissions. That should alarm every member of Congress, regardless of party. Americans entrust the Social Security Administration with some of the most sensitive information they possess. Social Security numbers, addresses, earnings histories, benefit information, and other personal records are not political tools, and they are not data for unelected political operatives to experiment with. The reporting describes DOGE personnel’s handling of sensitive information, including an encrypted file believed by DHS to contain names and addresses of approximately 1,000 individuals derived from SSA systems and transmitted to DOGE affiliates outside the agency. Even more disturbing, SSA reportedly has not been able to determine with certainty what information was actually shared. How is that remotely acceptable? The article also discusses whistleblower allegations concerning a proposed effort involving 2.7 million people and SSA’s Death Master File, as well as questions surrounding DOGE communications with an advocacy organization seeking to overturn state election results. Congress should be demanding answers immediately. I also condemn Russell Vought and the broader effort he represents to weaken federal institutions and the career workforce that keeps them functioning. The American people did not elect Russell Vought to dismantle agencies, undermine federal workers, or reshape the government without meaningful congressional oversight. Congress cannot surrender its constitutional responsibilities to executive branch officials simply because they belong to the same political party. Frank Bisignano also owes Congress and the American people complete transparency. Assurances that SSA’s systems and data are secure mean very little when subsequent disclosures raise serious questions about what occurred inside the agency. If congressional inquiries are answered incompletely, inaccurately, or not at all, Congress has a responsibility to investigate and compel the truth. And SSA leadership must be held accountable for protecting the agency itself. Social Security belongs to the American people. Its employees, its systems, and the personal information entrusted to it should never become collateral damage in a political project. DOGE may no longer operate as it once did, but that does not erase what happened. Ending an initiative does not eliminate the need to investigate its actions, determine who authorized them, identify what information was accessed or transmitted, and establish whether laws, regulations, agency policies, or court orders were violated. I am asking you to use your authority as a member of Congress to demand a full accounting of DOGE’s activities at SSA, support meaningful congressional oversight, protect whistleblowers, and hold responsible officials accountable wherever the evidence leads. This is bigger than party politics. Congress is a separate branch of government. Your oath is to the Constitution, not to a president, Russell Vought, Frank Bisignano, DOGE, or any administration. The American people deserve to know what happened to their information, who authorized it, and whether anyone broke the law. We deserve representatives willing to demand those answers. Please stand up for your constituents and exercise the oversight authority you were elected to use.
