Subject: Proposal to Accelerate SSD and SSI Determinations to 9 Days Using Advanced AI
Dear President Trump, Senator Scott, Senator Graham, and Distinguished Colleagues:
I write as a constituent from Prosperity, South Carolina, to urge immediate legislative action to modernize Social Security Disability Insurance (SSD) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) processing.
Currently, many applicants wait approximately nine months—or longer—for an initial decision. For people who are disabled, unable to work, and without other support, this delay causes unnecessary hardship and fails to serve the welfare of those the programs are intended to help.
With today’s advanced artificial intelligence capabilities, these determinations should take no more than nine days. AI systems can rapidly gather relevant data from existing sources, cross-reference medical, financial, and employment records, fact-check reported assets, and continuously monitor benefit recipients to limit fraud—while still preserving due process and the right to appeal.
To make this possible, I respectfully request that Congress pass legislation that:
• Directs the Social Security Administration to deploy advanced AI for accelerated claim review and ongoing fraud detection;
• Sets a clear performance target of nine days for initial determinations in standard cases;
• Ensures necessary data-sharing agreements across agencies with strong privacy and accuracy safeguards; and
• Provides for statewide (and nationwide) enforcement and accountability.
Modern technology already supports faster, more accurate government services in many areas. Applying it here would reduce suffering for legitimate claimants, improve program integrity, and restore public confidence in these essential safety-net programs.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I urge you to advance this proposal without delay.
Respectfully,
Melissa DuVall
Constituent in Prosperity, S.C.
