The No Kings protests all over the country and the world reveal the crisis in American governance: the growing normalization of authoritarian behavior and the erosion of checks and balances. Donald Trump has made clear—through his actions, rhetoric, and continued efforts to undermine the rule of law—that he poses an ongoing threat to our democratic institutions. Continuing to fail to hold Trump accountable sets a dangerous precedent. It signals that presidents—particularly those with authoritarian impulses—can act with impunity. No president is above the law. That’s the central message of the No Kings movement, and it’s one I hope you will take to heart. You already made it more difficult for Americans to vote with your support of the SAVE act. I wrote urging you to vote against this. You were elected in part by Americans voting from abroad, and this act aims is voter suppression in disguise. Along with gerrymandering, this is another way Republicans are trying to suppress the vote because it’s the only way they can win.
