I cannot believe I have to send this letter, begging you, representatives of our great state, to protect the things that benefit child development most, but here I am asking you to back down from this crusade against public broadcasting. This draconian measure which seems to only seek to ensure partisan broadcasting and an uninformed electorate has to be stopped. I get that the prevailing thought from the leadership is that, "if they want it badly enough, they'll pay for it themselves." While that might work for a myriad of issues, it doesn't work when the threatened audience is not yet able to tie their shoes, much less earn an income. PBS and its peers in public broadcasting are responsible for the growth and development of this entire nation, since before you or I was born. Sesame Street and the Electric Company helped shape the person I am and undoubtedly the person you are, reading this. You had educational reinforcement from the letter of the day, the alphabet song, talks about math and educational concepts - all from public broadcasting. Please, please, please, do not let the politics of grown men and women find their way into the development and wellbeing of children. Please end this assault on Sesame Street and programs like it that just seek the improvement of the American populace.
