URGENT: End the Recess and Address the Energy Crisis
To: Rep. Beatty, Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted
From: A verified voter in Columbus, OH
April 10
I am writing to express my profound frustration with the current legislative paralysis in Washington. While the American people are struggling under the weight of the worst energy crisis in history, Republican leadership sent Congress on an extended recess. This is unacceptable. I am calling on all Republicans to demand that Congress return to Washington, so you can fulfill your duty to serve the American people. It is a dereliction of duty to leave the Capitol while the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked and families in my district are being forced to choose between fuel and food. We do not need more delays or district work periods - we need votes on the floor. I urge you to immediately take up and pass the following measures: - Implement Windfall Profits Rebates and Price Caps: We must prevent oil and gas companies from using the war in Iran as an opportunity to gouge consumers. Excessive revenue since the war began should returned directly to the American people in the form of rebates. In addition, we need temporary, strategic price caps on domestic energy to ensure that the blockade in the Middle East isn't used as an excuse for corporate profiteering. American taxpayers are already paying billions for this unwanted war, and we absolutely should not be paying billions more into the pockets of energy companies. - Direct Household Rebates: We need immediate financial relief to offset the triple shock of oil, gas, and fertilizer costs. This relief can be easily funded by closing tax loopholes and reinstating tax enforcement on corporations and the wealthy. - Expansion of LIHEAP Funding: Surge resources to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program immediately to ensure no one in our district loses power this year. - Prioritize the Renewable Backlog: We have over 11GW of clean energy projects currently stalled in federal permitting. I am demanding that you pass legislation—such as the Energy Bills Relief Act—that fast-tracks these low-cost renewable projects through the backlog, rather than allowing gas-fired plants to jump the line. - Modernize the Grid, Not Deregulation: We need investment in Advanced Transmission Technologies and interregional lines that allow us to move cheap, domestic wind and solar to where it’s needed most. I support grid modernization that increases capacity on existing lines, not permitting reform that serves as a Trojan horse for oil executives to bypass environmental oversight. The blockade in the Middle East is a global crisis, but the blockade in the U.S. Capitol is a choice made by Republican leadership. I expect members of the majority party to stop playing political games and start working with Democrats to help working Americans survive the global crisis created by the Executive Branch. I will be closely monitoring the legislative calendar and your individual voting records as we move toward the midterms.
