An Open Letter

To: Rep. Begich, Sen. Sullivan, Sen. Murkowski

From: A constituent in Cooper Landing, AK

December 12

Thank you Senators for voting for the Democratic bill to extend ACA subsidies. Senator Murkowski is correct that you need to do better and cannot just say Happy Holidays and brace for the new year. Health care in our country is broken. The ACA is not a success. It is, however, better than having fewer people with care. A for-profit health care system will always result in worse outcomes and more expense and it is time to accept that this has been proven out again and again. Good on you for helping to extend the subsidies for now. Giving ourselves breathing room will allow the next move to be determined. I know that the GOP has been working hard to develop concepts of a plan since 2015 so a decade later I know we should see something materialize soon. In the meantime I suggest advancing a single payer healthcare system so we can quit pretending like the invisible hand of the market is capable of addressing rare conditions or incentivizing the production of necessary but unprofitable drugs at all, much less in time to actually save lives. All that said, you deserve credit for your vote and for showing up to work with people you disagree with. Thank you.
