Reject bill threatening civil liberties, seek balanced counterterrorism approach

This proposed legislation raises serious concerns about the potential for government overreach and suppression of civil liberties. The provisions allowing the arbitrary designation of organizations as "terrorist supporting" based on vague criteria, without sufficient due process protections, could enable the muzzling of legitimate dissent. Furthermore, making such designations retroactive undermines principles of fair notice and risks punishing lawful activities after the fact. While the intent to combat terrorism financing is understandable, existing laws already criminalize providing material support to terrorist groups. Creating a parallel system to unilaterally revoke organizations' tax-exempt status, based on an expansive and ambiguous definition of "support," is an excessive measure that jeopardizes constitutionally protected rights of speech and association. Rather than pursuing this blunt and potentially abusive framework, I urge a more balanced approach that enhances counterterrorism efforts through appropriate criminal prosecutions while upholding robust civil liberties protections. Measures that undermine fundamental freedoms are self-defeating in a free society. I implore you to reject this bill and instead champion policies that keep our nation safe and our democratic values intact.
