I am writing to demand the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement following the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old woman killed by an ICE agent in south Minneapolis on Wednesday. This tragedy demonstrates that ICE has become a dangerous, unaccountable agency that threatens public safety rather than protecting it.
According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara, there was "nothing to indicate that this woman was the target of any law enforcement investigation." Renee Nicole Good was simply in her car when federal agents approached. Bystander video shows an ICE agent opening fire as her vehicle moved away, striking her in the head. She died at a local hospital. Her mother described her as "loving, forgiving and affectionate."
The Trump administration deployed more than 2,000 federal agents to Minneapolis in what ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons called the "largest immigration operation ever." This massive show of force resulted in the death of a woman who was not under investigation. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey reviewed the footage and called the federal self-defense claim "bulls**t," stating the ICE agent was "recklessly using power" and demanding ICE leave the city. Governor Tim Walz called the deployment a "war" against Minnesota and urged the federal government to leave, writing "You've done enough."
ICE operates with minimal oversight and maximum lethality. The agency's mission can be accomplished through existing law enforcement structures without maintaining a separate federal force that operates outside community accountability. The Department of Homeland Security and local police can handle immigration enforcement without ICE's militarized approach.
I urge you to cosponsor legislation to abolish ICE and transfer its essential functions to agencies with proper oversight mechanisms. Renee Nicole Good's death cannot be in vain. No community should live under occupation by federal agents who kill residents without consequence.
