Pass Safe Communities Act to protect immigrants, build trust

To: Rep. Peisch, Sen. Creem

Massachusetts should enact the Safe Communities Act to protect immigrants from unwarranted deportations and build trust between law enforcement and immigrant communities. This bill would prohibit police from being deputized as immigration agents or inquiring about someone's immigration status. It builds on a court ruling that local cops cannot detain individuals solely based on ICE requests, except for serious crimes. Current fears of deportation are deterring people from reporting crimes or leaving their homes. The Act allows immigrants to live without constant fear while promoting public safety by encouraging cooperation with police. Passing this sensible legislation upholds Massachusetts' values as a welcoming community for all.
