Certify and Publish the ERA in the constitution
To: Pres. Biden
From: A constituent in Cincinnati, OH
November 18, 2024
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to strongly urge you to instruct the U.S. Archivist to certify and publish the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) as the 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution.
The ERA represents a historic and long-overdue step toward guaranteeing equality under the law, irrespective of sex. After over 100 years of struggle and advocacy, the ERA has now been ratified by 38 states—meeting the necessary threshold for inclusion in the Constitution. It is time for our nation to fulfill its promise of equality for all, regardless of gender.
By certifying the ERA, you would ensure that sex-based discrimination is explicitly prohibited under the Constitution, providing a robust legal foundation to address gender inequality in all areas of life, from the workplace to healthcare to education. This would be a critical advancement for women and all people who face gender-based discrimination in the U.S.
I understand that the question of the ERA’s ratification timeline remains a subject of debate, but I believe the legal and historical arguments support the certification of the ERA. Given the overwhelming bipartisan support and the clear majority of states that have ratified the amendment, there is no reason to delay this essential step toward equality.
As President of the United States, you have the power to ensure that the ERA is officially recognized and published as part of our nation’s founding document. I urge you to take this decisive action and fulfill the promise of equal rights for all Americans.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue. I look forward to your leadership in advancing gender equality and ensuring that the ERA is finally enshrined in the Constitution.
