International Organizations. Mr. Carl's documented statements disqualify him from representing the United States in diplomatic forums.
Mr. Carl has made deeply troubling public statements that demonstrate he cannot effectively represent all Americans or work with the diverse international community this position requires:
1. He stated that "American whites are victims of a cultural genocide" and claimed that "anti-white discrimination is the most pervasive and politically salient form of racism today." These statements promote division and ignore the lived experiences of millions of Americans who face actual discrimination.
2. He wrote, "The great replacement is real, and they're going to try to make you pay for it," and declared, "We must utterly defeat the Great Replacement as a political strategy, and permanently remove from power all who advance it." The Great Replacement theory is a dangerous conspiracy theory that has been cited as motivation for multiple mass shootings, including the 2022 Buffalo supermarket massacre.
3. He said, "Jews have often loved to play the victim" and that "The Holocaust dominates so much of modern Jewish history. Everyone has traumas in their past. How much are we going to relitigate them?" These statements minimize the Holocaust and promote harmful stereotypes about Jewish people.
The Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations serves as the primary liaison between the United States and the United Nations, where representatives from 193 countries work together. Someone who promotes white nationalist theories and makes derogatory statements about racial and religious groups cannot credibly advocate for human rights, combat discrimination, or build the international coalitions America needs.
Even Republican Senator John Curtis of Utah has announced his opposition, stating he finds Carl's "anti-Israel views and insensitive remarks about the Jewish people unbecoming of the position for which he has been nominated."
I urge you to oppose this nomination and ensure that America's diplomatic representatives can effectively serve all Americans and work respectfully with people of all backgrounds.
Thank you for your consideration.
