The EPA is currently deciding which contaminants to monitor in our nation’s drinking water. As health professionals, we know that microplastics are no longer just an environmental issue—they are a matter of public health. Research shows these particles accumulate in human organs, cross the placental barrier, and are linked to immune disruption and chronic disease. Vulnerable and marginalized communities are often at the highest risk. I’ve signed a letter urging EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin to include microplastics in the sixth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 6) cycle. This is a critical step toward transparency and future regulation.
