The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) was established by Benjamin Franklin in 1775 when the Second Continental Congress appointed him as the first Postmaster General. The modern USPS, an independent agency, was officially created by the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970, signed into law by President Richard Nixon, transitioning it from the Post Office Department into a self-sustaining entity.
The post office is essential for rural places that other delivery services will not serve. It is often how they get their medicines. It is an essential part of maintaining access to free and fair elections by way of absentee and mail in ballots. It is an essential way we are able to privately communicate with one another.
Trump is moving to dissolve its leadership and bring the independent agency under his administration’s control. This cannot be allowed—protect the USPS!
