Defend the Endangered Species Act—Reject the Redefinition of “Harm”

As your constituent, I’m urging you to take immediate and vocal action against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s proposal to gut the Endangered Species Act by redefining the term “harm.” This is not a minor regulatory shift—it’s a dangerous rollback that would greenlight habitat destruction and strip endangered species of vital protections. Right now, the ESA recognizes that destroying a species’ habitat can be just as lethal as direct killing. That definition is based on decades of science and legal precedent. The proposed change would erase that understanding—allowing developers and industry to destroy critical ecosystems so long as they don’t physically touch the species. It’s an open invitation for extinction. This is a betrayal of the ESA’s core purpose: not just to prevent extinction, but to restore and recover struggling species. Narrowing the definition of “take” ignores the fact that habitat loss is the number one cause of species endangerment. It prioritizes short-term profit over long-term survival—for wildlife and for future generations. I ask you to:
• Speak out publicly against this rollback
• Demand congressional oversight
 • Introduce or support legislation to safeguard ESA protections
• Pressure the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to withdraw this proposal The ESA has been one of our most successful conservation laws. Gutting it now would be an irreversible step backward. Please stand up for science, biodiversity, and the planet we’ll leave behind.
