I am writing to urge you to prioritize the immediate renewal of Affordable Care Act subsidies that expired at the end of last year. The Trump administration's recently announced health care framework offers no concrete relief for Americans facing doubled premium payments right now.
Since the subsidies expired, premium payments have more than doubled for the average ACA customer. This is not a theoretical problem requiring long-term study. Families in your district are making impossible choices between health coverage and other necessities today. While the White House releases vague proposals about Health Savings Accounts and price transparency, real people are losing access to affordable care.
The administration's framework lacks any specific legislative language or timeline for implementation. Dr. Mehmet Oz himself described it as merely a "broad roadmap" requiring "ongoing conversations" about details. Meanwhile, a similar proposal by Senators Cassidy and Crapo to redirect ACA subsidies to HSAs already failed on a party-line vote last month. We cannot afford to wait for another round of failed negotiations while premiums remain unaffordable.
Price transparency requirements and most favored nation drug pricing may have merit as long-term reforms, but they do nothing to address the immediate crisis created by expired subsidies. Trump issued similar price transparency rules in his first term to limited effect. These are not solutions that will lower my premiums this month or next.
I urge you to support immediate bipartisan legislation to renew the ACA subsidies. Americans need relief now, not aspirational frameworks that may never materialize into actual policy. With midterm elections approaching, voters will remember whether you prioritized concrete action over political posturing on health care affordability.
