Support and Cosponsor the Tribal Access to Nutrition Assistance Act

To: Sen. Baldwin, Sen. Johnson, Rep. Wied

From: A verified voter in Oneida, WI

July 27

Please support and cosponsor the Tribal Access to Nutrition Assistance Act of 2026. This legislation would allow eligible households to participate in both the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations during the same month. I am an enrolled citizen of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, and I have personally experienced the current system that forces Native households to choose between SNAP and Food Distribution. I also know others in my community who have faced the same choice. Although both programs provide essential nutrition assistance, they serve different needs, and neither necessarily supplies everything a household needs for the month. This restriction creates an unnecessary barrier for Native families who already meet the eligibility requirements for both programs. It is also inconsistent with how other federal nutrition programs operate. Eligible households may receive SNAP alongside programs such as WIC, yet households eligible for Food Distribution are denied that same flexibility simply because they rely on a program serving Tribal communities. Allowing participation in both programs would reduce administrative burdens, give families greater flexibility in meeting their nutritional needs, and meaningfully strengthen food security in Indian Country. No eligible household should have to decide which form of food assistance it can afford to go without. Please support the Tribal Access to Nutrition Assistance Act and encourage congressional leadership to advance it.
