Demand for Accountability: Misuse of HUD Website for Partisan Propaganda

To: Rep. DeGette, Sen. Hickenlooper, Sen. Bennet

From: A constituent in Denver, CO

September 30, 2025

I am writing to express my outrage over the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s recent decision to display a politically charged message on its official government website blaming the “Radical Left” for a looming government shutdown. This is an egregious misuse of public resources and a gross violation of the principle that federal agencies must serve the American people—not act as a propaganda arm for partisan interests. Government websites exist to provide accurate information and essential services, not to inflame division or advance one party’s talking points. The message on HUD’s website not only undermines public trust in our institutions, it also distracts from the very real consequences of a government shutdown: hundreds of thousands of federal employees left without pay, disruptions to housing support, health care access, food assistance, and countless other critical services that millions of Americans rely on. It is deeply concerning that HUD appears to be the only agency so far to display this kind of partisan message, and I fear what precedent it sets if left unchallenged. No American—regardless of party affiliation—should have to worry that the official websites of their government are being weaponized to score political points.
