I am writing to urge your immediate intervention and strongest opposition regarding the Department of Justice’s reported finalization of a $1.776 billion administrative settlement to establish the "Truth and Justice Commission." This taxpayer-funded compensation pool—created in exchange for dropping personal civil lawsuits filed by President Trump against federal agencies—represents an unprecedented conflict of interest, an egregious misuse of public resources, and a direct circumvention of congressional oversight. By utilizing the Treasury Department’s Judgment Fund to finance this commission, the executive branch is attempting to bypass the constitutional appropriations power explicitly granted to Congress. The structural framework of this proposed arrangement raises severe ethical and legal alarms: Internal Conflict of Interest: The executive branch has essentially negotiated a massive financial payout with itself, violating the fundamental legal requirement that a settlement must occur between independent, adverse parties. Zero Transparency: Reports indicate the commission will operate under no obligation to publicly disclose its vetting process, eligibility criteria, or final financial awards to the public or to Congress. Political Exploitation of Public Funds: A broad mandate to compensate individuals claiming federal "weaponization"—which reports indicate could extend to political allies and individuals charged in connection with the January 6th Capitol riot—effectively transforms taxpayer dollars into a partisan slush fund. The American public deserves absolute assurance that federal agencies and public funds are not being weaponized to shield the executive branch or reward political allies. As my elected representative, I urge you to use every legislative, budgetary, and oversight tool at your disposal to investigate this settlement, block the allocation or transfer of federal funds to this unconstitutional commission, and demand full accountability from the Department of Justice.
