Letter to Congress RE: Urgent Call for Investigation into ICE Treatment of Deportees Sent to African Nations --- Dear Representative/Senator, I am writing as a constituent to urge immediate congressional oversight into ICE’s deportation of individuals to African nations where they have no ties. A New York Times investigation (August 30, 2026) documents ten deportees sent from Louisiana to Liberia, all describing abusive or violent treatment by ICE. Their accounts include shackling a man with a serious medical condition and refusing him care or toilet access; holding detainees in a freezing room without beds (“the freezer”); beating those who protested; denying medical care to pregnant women; tying one mother “like she was cattle”; and threatening to “shoot off” detainees’ feet. They were then abandoned in countries where they had no family, language, or means of survival (New York Times). An Associated Press investigation also documented ICE’s use of the WRAP, a full-body restraint device linked to 43 fatalities in law enforcement contexts, applied punitively against detainees seeking attorneys (Associated Press). DHS dismissed these reports as a “hoax,” but a blanket denial from the accused agency is not accountability. I respectfully request that you: 1. Hold public hearings before the Senate and House Judiciary Committees. 2. Demand an independent DHS Office of Inspector General investigation. 3. Suspend third-country deportations to nations where deportees have no ties, pending investigation. 4. Investigate ICE’s use of the WRAP restraint device. 5. Ensure detainee access to legal counsel and protect whistleblowers. If substantiated, this treatment violates constitutional due process and U.S. obligations under the Convention Against Torture.
