I'm writing to ask you to oppose Senate Bill 5384 which would dismantle the Department of Education. This department provides essential resources for children who are currently struggling to obtain an average education in Texas: kids of color, poor kids, disabled kids, kids who need financial assistance to attend college. I worked for several years in a Title I school and I can attest that these schools need federal resources. They don't have PTOs that can raise the money needed to supplement in areas the state and ISD don't fund. The parents are working two and three jobs just to get by; the ones I met would love to be more involved in school but it's not possible for them. The Department of Education provides essential services; it was created with strong bipartisan support with 14 Republican co-sponsors in 1979. Please think about these vulnerable kids and make sure they have the resources they need. Save the Department of Education.
