I am writing to urge you to oppose the SAVE America Act, which recently passed the House of Representatives. This legislation, modeled on the SAVE Act approved in April 2025, represents a dangerous solution in search of a nonexistent problem.
Voter fraud in the United States is remarkably low. Study after study has confirmed that instances of non-citizen voting or fraudulent registration are statistically negligible. Yet the SAVE America Act would require all Americans to provide proof of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, to register to vote. This requirement would block millions of eligible citizens from exercising their constitutional right to vote, particularly those who lack easy access to these documents, including low-income Americans, elderly voters, and rural residents.
The bill's provisions extend beyond citizenship verification. It mandates federal oversight of state voter rolls and creates a nationwide photo ID requirement for both in-person and mail voters. According to the Voting Rights Lab, a nonpartisan organization that tracks voting legislation in all 50 states, these measures would extort states for access to private voter data and represent a federal power grab over local election administration.
The timing of this legislation is particularly concerning given the Trump administration's ongoing attempts to interfere in local elections in states like Minnesota and Georgia. The Voting Rights Lab warns that regardless of Senate passage, this bill sends marching orders for state lawmakers to enact restrictive voting policies ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
I ask that you publicly oppose the SAVE America Act and any similar legislation that restricts ballot access under the guise of election security. Our democracy is strengthened when more eligible citizens can participate, not when we erect unnecessary barriers to the ballot box. Please stand against voter suppression and protect the fundamental right to vote for all Americans.
