We Deserve Leaders Who Call Out Dangerous Rhetoric, Not Fuel It

Being critical of government actions and calling out authoritarianism is not hate speech. It is a cornerstone of democracy. The right’s attempt to frame dissent as hateful or dangerous is not only dishonest—it is dangerous. If elected officials cannot handle scrutiny, perhaps they should reconsider the words and actions that lead Americans to call out authoritarian behavior in the first place.
This nation is built on the principle that government serves the people, not the other way around. Yet, too many in office appear more concerned with pleasing donors, scoring political points, or defending the individual currently inhabiting the White House than they are with protecting the rights and well-being of their constituents. That is not leadership—it is complicity.
Authoritarianism thrives when criticism is silenced. Democracy thrives when it is challenged, questioned, and held accountable. Labeling opposition as “hate speech” is an intentional distortion meant to suppress legitimate concerns and shield those in power from responsibility. Americans see through this, and history will judge it harshly.
I urge you to reflect on your priorities. Do the work of the people who elected you. Stop catering to special interests and political strongmen. Uphold the Constitution—not just the parts that are convenient for your party or your donors. The First Amendment is no less important than the Second. Our freedom of speech, our right to protest, and our ability to criticize the government are non-negotiable.
It is past time for you to draw a line and reject this dangerous rhetoric. I call on you to make a public statement pledging to refrain from framing legitimate criticism as hate speech and instead commit to calling out the negative, authoritarian language that has taken such a strong hold on the Republican Party. Your constituents deserve to know you will stand for democracy, not against it.
