Vote NO on the SAVE America Act and other bills that contain it
To: Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted
From: A verified voter in Athens, OH
July 28
I am writing to urge you in the strongest possible terms to vote NO on the SAVE America Act and any related bills. This bill is a direct attack on our right to vote. Its consequences for our democracy would be severe and lasting, and our elected leaders are trying to use improper channels to get it passed.
The SAVE America Act would require Americans to show documents like a passport or birth certificate just to register to vote or update their voter registration. Over 21 million voting-age citizens don't have ready access to these documents. Nearly half of all Americans don't have a passport. Tying the right to vote to the ability to produce expensive, difficult-to-obtain documents fundamentally bars our friends and neighbors from participating in the system, and that is unacceptable.
The burden of this legislation would fall hardest on the most vulnerable. As many as sixty-nine million women have a birth certificate that doesn't match their current legal name. Rural voters could face an eight-hour round trip drive just to register to vote. Native voters, voters with disabilities, survivors of domestic violence, young voters, and people who lost their documents for any reason, including natural disasters, would all face new and serious barriers to participation. These are our neighbors, our family members, our fellow citizens and this bill would turn them away from the ballot box.
I am asking you to stand strong against this voter suppression bill. The right to vote is the right that protects all other rights. Please vote NO on the SAVE America Act or any related bill and do everything in your power to stop its passage. Thank you.
