The administration's attempt to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) by executive order is an alarming overreach of power that threatens vital humanitarian aid programs. USAID is an independent agency established by Congress to deliver critical foreign assistance that advances U.S. national security and interests around the world. Unilaterally shutting it down would upend decades of U.S. policy and leadership. Congress must intervene immediately to block this unconstitutional power grab. The President does not have the authority to abolish an agency created by Congress through executive action alone. This is a direct attack on the separation of powers enshrined in our democratic system of checks and balances. Eradicating USAID would have catastrophic humanitarian consequences, abruptly ending programs that provide emergency food aid, deliver life-saving medications, support education initiatives, promote democracy and human rights, and much more. Such a reckless move would undermine U.S. diplomatic efforts, cede influence to strategic rivals like China and Russia, and destabilize regions already grappling with conflict, hunger, disease and poverty. The administration's justification of alleged fraud and waste provides no evidence and contradicts USAID's long track record of efficient program delivery overseen by stringent reporting requirements. This appears to be an ideological attempt to gut foreign aid under the guise of reform. I urge you to take immediate action through Congressional oversight and potential legal challenges to protect this vital agency and its mission. Upholding the constitutional balance of power is essential for safeguarding American humanitarian leadership and our strategic interests abroad.
