I understand the concerns about potentially privatizing the United States Postal Service (USPS). The USPS provides a vital public service by ensuring affordable and universal mail delivery across the country, including to rural and remote areas that may not be profitable for private companies. Privatization could lead to higher costs for consumers, reduced service in underserved areas, and the loss of good-paying jobs that have provided economic mobility. Furthermore, the USPS has constitutional origins, and privatizing it may raise legal challenges regarding Congress' authority to establish and regulate postal services. Private companies currently lack the capacity and infrastructure to take over the immense operational scale of the USPS, which handled over 142 billion pieces of mail in 2019 alone. Instead of privatizing, a more reasonable solution would be to address the financial constraints and pension funding requirements that have hindered the USPS's financial stability. With appropriate reforms, the USPS can continue to serve the public interest while maintaining affordable and reliable mail delivery for all Americans, regardless of location.
