I am writing as a constituent to ask you to reconsider the current ICE enforcement surge I believe the federal government has a legitimate role in enforcing immigration law, and I support prioritizing the removal of people who pose real public safety threats, including those with violent criminal convictions. However, I am deeply concerned that the current approach goes far beyond that goal. Large numbers of undocumented people who are working, paying taxes, and otherwise complying with the law are being targeted through community arrests. This approach is extraordinarily expensive, disruptive to families and local economies, and, in my view, inhumane. It also diverts resources away from focusing on genuinely dangerous individuals. I am especially concerned about the cost. Mass detention and deportation require tens of billions of federal dollars at a time when our country faces serious fiscal challenges. I do not believe this is an effective or responsible use of public funds. I would urge you to support a more targeted enforcement strategy that focuses on violent offenders, while pursuing a legal worker program or temporary legal status for long-term, non-criminal undocumented residents who are contributing to our economy. Providing a lawful way to work would improve compliance, increase tax revenue, reduce exploitation, and allow enforcement resources to be used where they matter most.
I respectfully ask you to use your oversight and legislative authority to press for an end to the current enforcement surge and to work toward a more effective, humane, and fiscally responsible immigration policy.
Thank you for your time and service.
