The Trump administration's executive orders attacking diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs are misguided and harmful. These programs are not illegal quotas, but rather lawful strategies to equalize opportunities for disadvantaged groups facing unfair barriers. Dismantling DEI efforts will weaken our economy, endanger national security by limiting the federal workforce's ability to serve all Americans, and threaten our democracy. The orders distort civil rights laws that actually require proactive measures to prevent discrimination and remedy persistent inequities. Diverse and inclusive organizations better comply with anti-discrimination laws and serve the needs of our diverse nation. Rather than rolling back progress, we should expand efforts to make the American dream accessible to all.
