Opposition to The Big, Beautiful Bill
To: Sen. Banks, Sen. Young
From: A constituent in Bloomington, IN
May 22, 2025
I am writing to express my strong opposition to the so-called "One Big, Beautiful Bill." This legislation represents a harmful step backward for our country and would hurt many vulnerable Americans. Here are my main concerns:
First, the bill gives massive tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans while taking away healthcare and food assistance from those who need it most. The Congressional Budget Office estimates it would leave 9 million people without health coverage and cut $300 billion from food assistance programs.
Second, it weakens our system of checks and balances by making it harder for courts to hold government officials accountable when they break the law. This threatens the foundation of our democracy.
Third, the bill removes requirements for insurance to cover gender-affirming healthcare, denying medically necessary care to transgender Americans. This is discriminatory and dangerous.
Finally, the process for passing this bill has been rushed and secretive, with important debates happening late at night to avoid public scrutiny. Legislation this important deserves proper discussion and transparency.
I urge you to vote against this bill and instead support policies that help all Americans, not just the wealthy few. Please protect healthcare access, food assistance programs, and the rights of all citizens.
I will be paying close attention to how you respond to this harmful legislation. The American people deserve better.
