I am writing to express serious alarm at the escalating authoritarian tactics being used under this administration, and to urge you to speak out and act before more damage is done.
This week, Colombian President Gustavo Petro compared Donald Trump to Hitler in a United Nations speech and called for an investigation into recent U.S. military strikes that allegedly killed civilians. Whether you agree with him or not, the fact that our allies are making that comparison on a global stage should be a wake-up call.
At the same time, the administration is attempting to label “antifa” as a domestic terrorist organization, even though it is not a centralized group but a belief: anti-fascism. By criminalizing that label, this government is effectively saying that resisting fascism is itself a threat. That raises the question: what does that make supporting fascism?
This is not about a single policy. It is about a pattern:
• Silencing critics
• Labeling dissent as terrorism
• Ignoring global condemnation of U.S. violence
• Using language and power to divide, punish, and control
We have seen this pattern before in history books. We all know where it leads. I am asking you not to be silent in the face of it.
I urge you to:
• Publicly reject any designation of antifa as a terrorist organization
• Condemn the use of executive power to criminalize ideology
• Support congressional oversight of U.S. military strikes involving civilian harm
• Speak up when foreign leaders call out dangerous authoritarian parallels, because ignoring it will not make it less true
We are in dangerous territory. And we are watching.
