I am writing as your constituent to demand that you act immediately to assert Congress's constitutional authority over the use of military force against Iran.
The United States has launched military strikes on Iran without a declaration of war, without an Authorization for Use of Military Force, and without any demonstrated urgent threat to the American homeland. This is unconstitutional and illegal under both U.S. and international law.
President Trump has no congressional authorization to wage war on Iran. Polling shows that only about one in five Americans support military action against Iran, and a majority of independents and even a significant share of Republicans are opposed. The American people did not consent to another costly, open-ended war in the Middle East.
I urge you to take the following actions immediately:
1. Bring War Powers resolutions to a vote. Measures introduced in both the House and Senate under the War Powers Resolution must be voted on without delay. Congress must make clear the president does not have its authorization for the use of armed force against Iran.
2. Publicly declare your opposition to unauthorized military strikes and call for an immediate halt to further escalation.
3. Support diplomacy. Reports indicate that U.S.-Iran nuclear talks were actively progressing toward a potential agreement. Diplomacy, not bombs, is the path to security.
We have seen where illegal wars of choice lead — in Iraq, in Libya, and beyond. Congress must not be silent while the executive branch drags us into another catastrophic conflict without your authorization and without the support of the American people.
Please act now. History is watching.
