An Open Letter

I’m writing to express deep alarm about reports that President Trump is using the intelligence apparatus—specifically the Office of the Director of National Intelligence—to pursue debunked election-fraud narratives and to pressure or justify federal seizure of sensitive election materials in Fulton County. Recent reporting describes the Federal Bureau of Investigation executing a search and seizure of 2020 election records (including ballots and voter data) under a sealed warrant, with limited transparency to local officials and the public about scope, necessity, or safeguards for chain of custody and voter privacy. At the same time, reporting indicates that Tulsi Gabbard has been redirected from core national-security coordination responsibilities to chase allegations that the 2020 election was “stolen,” including theories involving foreign interference—claims that have been repeatedly rejected by courts, election officials, and prior investigations. This is not a normal or appropriate use of intelligence leadership. The DNI’s mission is to ensure sound intelligence for national security decision-making—not to validate a political narrative about a settled election or to create pretext for executive action affecting voting rules ahead of midterm elections. What’s most troubling is the predictable consequence: using the power of federal institutions to amplify conspiracy claims, erode confidence in election administration, and intimidate state and local election professionals. The raid itself has been described by multiple outlets as an escalation that risks undermining democratic norms—especially given the lack of public justification and the sweeping nature of the materials reportedly taken (including voter rolls and digital election records). I urge you to use your oversight authority immediately. Specifically, please: Demand transparency from DOJ/FBI: Request the court unseal, to the maximum extent possible, the warrant application and provide a public-facing explanation of the investigation’s predicate, scope, and controls. Protect voter privacy and election integrity: Require written assurances on how voter data, ballot images, and records are being handled, stored, audited, and returned—along with documented chain-of-custody procedures and independent auditing. Hold oversight hearings: Convene hearings (House/Senate Intelligence, Judiciary, and Oversight as appropriate) to examine whether the DNI and the intelligence community are being politicized for domestic election disputes, and whether lawful limits and firewalls are being respected. Request Inspector General review: Seek IG scrutiny of any role the DNI’s office played in driving, coordinating, or publicizing election-related “findings,” especially if intended to support executive orders or policy changes. Reaffirm the facts and reject conspiracies: Use your platform to state plainly that extraordinary claims—such as foreign governments “hacking” U.S. voting machines through exotic means—require extraordinary evidence, and that rhetoric encouraging reprisals against perceived political enemies is dangerous and anti-democratic. This is not about partisan advantage. It is about whether federal power is being used to relitigate a past election through intimidation, selective enforcement, and the repurposing of national-security institutions for domestic political ends. Congress has both the authority and the obligation to draw a bright line here. Please let me know what steps you will take—publicly and promptly—to ensure accountability, protect voters’ private information, and preserve confidence in the integrity of U.S. elections.
