Enshrine Habeas Corpus — Before It’s Gone for Good

To: Sen. McCormick, Sen. Fetterman, Rep. Fitzpatrick

From: A constituent in Quakertown, PA

May 14

This should be obvious, but apparently it needs to be said: the right to challenge unlawful detention must never be up for debate. Habeas corpus is not some optional formality—it is a cornerstone of freedom. It’s the line between democracy and authoritarianism. It’s what protects people from being locked away indefinitely without cause, without trial, without rights. The fact that it can even be threatened in this country is horrifying. And let’s be real: history tells us exactly who loses first when those rights get stripped—Black and brown communities, immigrants, dissenters, the poor. It’s already happening. People detained without charges, families torn apart, legal black holes created in broad daylight. If you care at all about civil liberties, about human rights, about the Constitution, then do something about it. Enshrine habeas corpus into federal law—no exceptions, no loopholes, no emergency powers that turn into permanent abuses. You took an oath. You said you’d defend the Constitution. Here’s your chance to mean it. Do not let this basic protection vanish on your watch. If you do nothing, you’re not neutral—you’re complicit. We are watching. And we remember.
