Reinstate the Ban on M-44 Cyanide Bombs on Public Lands

To: Sen. Lee, Pres. Trump, Rep. Owens, Sen. Curtis

Reinstate the 2023 ban on M-44 cyanide bombs on BLM public lands. The Trump administration's April memorandum quietly reversed a commonsense protection that kept hikers, families, and their pets safe from spring-loaded traps that spray sodium cyanide on contact. These devices don't discriminate between a coyote and a child. We already know what happens when M-44s are deployed carelessly. In 2017, a 14-year-old boy in Idaho was sprayed by one of these traps. He survived. His dog didn't. That incident triggered bans in Idaho, Colorado, and Oregon. The first Trump administration even reversed its own reauthorization after public backlash. The Biden ban was the right call, and gutting it now puts every person walking on public land at risk. As former BLM official Nada Wolff Culver put it: "There is no hiding the risk they are putting on the users of public lands." Restore the ban.
