Tear Down Trump's Ballroom

To: Sen. Murray, Sen. Cantwell, Rep. DelBene

From: A verified voter in Bothell, WA

September 1

Restore the White House's East Wing. Trump tore down a historic wing of the People's House to build a 90,000-square-foot personal ballroom, and the Supreme Court just cleared the way for construction to continue by ruling that the National Trust for Historic Preservation — a nonprofit chartered by Congress specifically to protect public buildings — lacks standing to challenge it. Chief Justice Roberts dissented, calling the construction "likely unlawful" and warning that those responsible must "follow the rules in deciding what to tear down and what to build up at the People's House." He's right. Congress has standing where the courts have refused to act. You have the authority and the obligation to intervene. The White House belongs to the American people, not to the family currently occupying it. If you won't use your power to stop this demolition of a national landmark, then at minimum go on record demanding that any future restoration of the East Wing be funded entirely by the Trump family — not taxpayers. History will remember who stood up for the People's House and who got in line for a ballroom invitation.
