I am writing to express deep concern regarding the reports that Representative Nicole Collier has been confined in the Texas House chamber after refusing to submit to DPS custody. The actions taken against her represent an alarming overreach that threatens both legislative independence and democratic integrity. Representative Collier, who has stood firmly against discriminatory gerrymandering, should not be treated as a political prisoner for exercising her conscience and defending her constituents. No member of the Texas Legislature should be coerced into surrendering their autonomy or forced into custody in order to fulfill their elected duties. This situation not only undermines the rights of Rep. Collier but also erodes the trust Texans place in their government. Democracy cannot thrive when elected officials are restrained, silenced, or held against their will. The people of Texas deserve open and fair representation, not the weaponization of procedural power to suppress dissent. I urge you to: 1. Ensure the immediate release of Rep. Collier from any form of confinement or coercive custody. 2. End the use of DPS escorts and restrictive measures that intimidate or suppress legislators. 3. Uphold democratic principles by allowing members of the House to carry out their duties without fear of retaliation or silencing. Texas must remain a place where freedom, fairness, and democratic governance are respected. I stand in solidarity with Rep. Collier and with Texans fighting for justice and fair representation.
