Last week’s ICE attacks on people in Chicago reminded me of all the things we learned about the Gestapo raids of the 1930s/1940s. Remember when most Americans thought that Nazis, and dictatorship, and masked “police” were bad? I know my senators are as appalled and furious as I am about Trump’s violence, the same way my grandparents were so horrified by Nazi violence that risked their own lives to help liberate Europeans from Hitler’s regime. But my congressperson has not spoken out against Trump’s attacks on our communities. EVEN THOUGH these actions betray every *conservative* principle of limited government and individual liberty. Everyone from progressive to conservative should be enraged by these regressive and un-American actions. No federal agency should ever have the power to break into a citizen’s home without cause, deny access to counsel, or operate above the law. If we truly stand for freedom, then our government must be bound by the Constitution—not by fear or ideology.
