The SAVE Act would impose harsh and unnecessary documentation requirements for voter registration, despite the fact that current laws already require individuals to affirm their citizenship under penalty of perjury. Requiring voters to present original birth certificates or passports in person would create significant barriers for millions of eligible Americans—particularly those with low incomes, limited mobility, or difficulty accessing such documents. These burdens would disenfranchise countless citizens, hamper nonprofit civic engagement efforts, and strain already overworked election officials, all in response to the virtually nonexistent issue of non-citizen voting.
Instead of creating new obstacles to participation, Congress should reject the SAVE Act and prioritize efforts that expand access to voter registration while strengthening election security, transparency, and inclusion. This bill is a drastic overreach aimed at solving a problem that doesn’t exist—and its passage would erode trust in our democratic system. I strongly urge you to vote no on the SAVE Act.
