Jersey Director Nedia Morsy released the following statement applauding New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill and Attorney General Davenport for suing to stop the Roxbury ICE detention facility from proceeding:
“Protecting New Jersey families from the Trump regime’s racist, classist, and xenophobic terror will require every tool at our disposal, and that includes lawsuits like this. The Trump administration’s violent immigration operations in New Jersey and across the country are meant to silence, control and intimidate all of us. We applaud the Sherrill administration for their leadership to confront a brutal system and agency that has caused too much pain and suffering across our country.
“What’s happening in Roxbury is a direct reflection of the national crisis where the federal government time and again operates outside the bounds of the law and our constitution. There is no dignity for detained people. Not in New Jersey, not anywhere. We must be free to be with our families, and our communities.
“We also thank the dedicated activists who have been fighting to protect their community since we first learned that ICE was interested in the warehouse. Yesterday’s lawsuit exists because of the work of thousands of residents and local activists who have organized relentlessly to protect their neighbors and force accountability and transparency. Now is the opportunity for local and state leaders to not only hold ICE accountable but to guarantee New Jersey families their rights and protections.”
