I am writing again to urge you to take immediate legislative action to end this Republican administration’s military engagement with Iran. This war was a strategic and moral failure from the outset. Every day it continues furthers the damage to our nation.
The stated objectives of this war have not been achieved. Iran's regional posture remains largely unchanged, regional instability has increased, and the Iranian populace, whose suffering was supposedly a concern, has borne catastrophic civilian losses. There is no credible path to "victory," because the political and strategic conditions for such an outcome do not exist.
Meanwhile, the economic cost to Americans is staggering. Spending $1 billion per day on this unwinnable conflict drains resources from healthcare, education, infrastructure, and economic recovery in the US. Meanwhile, global energy markets and supply chains remain fragile, increasing inflation and financial insecurity for working families.
Diplomatically, our position is weakening. Our moral authority is eroded by civilian casualties, and we have ceded strategic influence to rivals who benefit from our entanglement.
My wife and I urge you to exercise your constitutional authority under the War Powers Resolution. Invoke its provisions to compel an end to unauthorized hostilities and refuse any further blank checks for military expansion in the region.
