An independent Federal Reserve is crucial to US economic policy and standing in the world.
There is nothing new about a president wishing to control the direction and actions of the Federal Reserve and the economy itself. But those wishes are not allowed for under the Federal Reserve Act.
Mere allegations of wrongdoing are not grounds for dismissal from government office, and allegations made in the case of Federal Reserve governor Dr. Lisa Cook have come exclusively from a Trump ally who has not gone through appropriate channels in our legal system.
The current occupant of the White House is unencumbered by concerns about whether he has legal authority or is constitutional empowered to act; he has demonstrated a reckless pattern of disregard for the powers vested in every branch and level of government that does not serve his own interests.
Congress must intervene to preserve our independent Federal Reserve, as conceived and codified in Congress’s own language. The value of the American economy will not patiently wait for us to sort out this president’s autocratic overreach.
