Establish healthcare administrator licensing to prioritize patient safety

July 23

Dear Michigan Legislators, I am writing to urge you to consider introducing legislation similar to Washington State's House Bill 1567 regarding healthcare administration licensing and oversight. As a registered nurse and board-certified adult nurse practitioner with over 30 years of experience, 25 of those as a nurse practitioner, I have witnessed firsthand the impact that healthcare administrators' decisions can have on patient care and safety. Unfortunately, many of these administrators lack direct patient care experience, relying solely on business and management training. House Bill 1567 in Washington State proposes to establish licensing requirements and a disciplinary process for healthcare administrators. This measure aims to ensure that those responsible for crafting policies and making critical decisions that affect patient care have the necessary healthcare knowledge and adhere to ethical guidelines. By enacting similar legislation in Michigan, we can safeguard patient well-being and hold healthcare administrators accountable for their actions. Maintaining a licensed and regulated workforce of administrators with a comprehensive understanding of healthcare dynamics would promote better alignment between administrative policies and the realities of patient care. I implore you to consider introducing a bill akin to Washington State's HB1567, as it represents a significant step towards prioritizing patient safety and upholding the highest standards of care in our state's healthcare facilities. Thank you for your consideration of this important matter. Sincerely, [Your Name], RN, ANP-BC
