Demand immediate oversight & accountability for U.S. strikes in Venezuela

January 3
Senator/Representative [Last Name], I am furious about the U.S. military action in Venezuela overnight (January 2–3, 2026). Multiple major outlets are reporting that the United States carried out large-scale strikes in and around Caracas and other locations, and that President Trump publicly claimed Nicolás Maduro and his wife were “captured” and flown out of the country. The Venezuelan government has condemned this as “military aggression” and declared a national emergency. These are not minor events, this is an act of war in practical effect, with massive consequences for civilians, regional stability, and U.S. credibility. (CBS News) Congress has a constitutional duty to check this. Unless Congress specifically authorized hostilities, this looks like another end-run around Article I war powers, and it demands immediate, public accountability. There is already active congressional language on this exact issue, including a War Powers resolution (S.J.Res. 90) to direct the removal of U.S. armed forces from hostilities “within or against Venezuela” that have not been authorized by Congress. (Congress.gov) Here is what I expect you to do, immediately: 1) Publicly state whether Congress authorized these strikes, and if not, call them what they are: unauthorized hostilities. 2) Demand an emergency briefing for all members of Congress, not selective briefings for political convenience. 3) Hold public hearings within days, not weeks, on the legal basis, objectives, targeting, civilian harm, and chain of command. 4) Introduce or support binding War Powers legislation to end any unauthorized U.S. military action in or against Venezuela. 5) Demand independent investigation of casualties and possible violations of U.S. and international law. If civilians were unlawfully harmed or protected sites were struck, that is not “tough,” it is criminal, and it should be treated that way. I also want to be blunt about motive. The administration can claim counter-narcotics or “restoring democracy,” but the pattern matters. Reuters has reported that the U.S. recently imposed a blockade affecting oil tankers and seized Venezuelan oil cargoes, cutting exports sharply. In that context, many Americans see this as resource-driven escalation dressed up as national security. You do not get to ignore that perception, you are responsible for stopping reckless, self-interested foreign adventurism before it drags us into a wider conflict. If this operation was conducted without lawful authorization and with reckless disregard for civilian life, Congress must treat it as a serious constitutional crisis. That includes impeachment inquiries if warranted by the facts and the law. I am not asking for performative statements, I am asking for action. Reply and tell me, specifically: - Did you support or oppose prior War Powers efforts on Venezuela? - Will you support an immediate vote to end unauthorized hostilities? - Will you support subpoenas and a public accounting of casualties and targeting decisions? I will be watching your actions, not your press releases.
