The Trump administration is sending ships to rip 900 ocean sensors out of the Atlantic and Pacific — and Congress already told them twice they couldn't do it. They're doing it anyway. Hurricane season started this week. This is not a climate change story. This is a hurricane story. A flooding story. A fisheries story. A weather forecasting story. A food security story. And a story about what happens when a government decides it would rather not know. Here is what is being destroyed. The Ocean Observatories Initiative — launched in 2016 after a decade of planning — is the world's most advanced continuously operating ocean-observing system. A $368 million network of more than 900 deep-sea instruments anchored off the coasts of Oregon, Washington State, Alaska, North Carolina, and the Irminger Sea — the body of water between Greenland and Iceland in the North Atlantic. In June 2026 — this month, as of today — the National Science Foundation will begin sending ships to pull those 900 instruments out of the water. The removal will take 15 months. What are you doing to prevent the administration from ignoring Congress? And more importantly, what are you doing to protect Texans from this action?
