The Trump administration is sending ships to rip 900 ocean sensors out of the Atlantic and Pacific — and Congress already told them twice they couldn't do it. They're doing it anyway. Hurricane season started this week. This is not a climate change story. This is a hurricane story. A flooding story. A fisheries story. A weather forecasting story. A food security story. And a story about what happens when a government decides it would rather not know. Here is what is being destroyed. The Ocean Observatories Initiative — launched in 2016 after a decade of planning — is the world's most advanced continuously operating ocean-observing system. A $368 million network of more than 900 deep-sea instruments anchored off the coasts of Oregon, Washington State, Alaska, North Carolina, and the Irminger Sea — the body of water between Greenland and Iceland in the North Atlantic. In June 2026 — this month, as of today — the National Science Foundation will begin sending ships to pull those 900 instruments out of the water. The removal will take 15 months.
