Elon Musk’s team seeks access to private US taxpayer information

I am writing to express my deep concern and unequivocal opposition to the efforts by the current administration to grant political appointees unauthorized access to sensitive taxpayer data within the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) systems. These actions represent an unprecedented and dangerous breach of taxpayer privacy, one that undermines public trust in our government’s ability to safeguard personal financial information. The IRS is entrusted with protecting the highly sensitive records of millions of Americans—records that contain Social Security numbers, financial transactions, employment details, and other confidential information. The proposal to grant members of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) access to the IRS Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS) is both reckless and unjustifiable. The mere fact that unelected and unvetted individuals could be allowed access to this data—without rigorous oversight and in clear violation of long-standing protections—is deeply alarming. No administration, regardless of political affiliation, should have unchecked authority over such a vast repository of private citizen data. This kind of overreach not only violates the spirit of the Internal Revenue Code and the Privacy Act of 1974 but also opens the door to potential abuses, including political targeting, financial exploitation, and unlawful surveillance. Taxpayer privacy is not a privilege—it is a fundamental right enshrined in law, and it must be defended with the highest level of integrity. I strongly urge you to take immediate legislative action to block this blatant attempt to erode taxpayer confidentiality. I call upon you to: 1. Demand Transparency – The administration must be held accountable for its rationale behind this proposal and disclose the full scope of its intentions. 2. Legislate Protections – Congress must enact stronger safeguards that explicitly prohibit political appointees or private-sector individuals from accessing IRS taxpayer records. 3. Hold Hearings – Congressional oversight hearings should be convened to investigate how and why this initiative was even considered and whether legal violations have already occurred. 4. Protect the Integrity of the IRS – Any attempt to compromise the neutrality and independence of the IRS must be met with firm resistance. It is essential that the agency remains focused on its core mission: fair and impartial tax administration. The American people deserve a government that respects their privacy, not one that seeks to infiltrate their personal and financial affairs for questionable purposes. Any failure to act against this dangerous initiative would constitute a dereliction of duty to your constituents and to the Constitution. I urge you to take an unambiguous stand against this abuse of power. I look forward to your response on this critical matter and expect to see swift action in defense of taxpayer privacy.
