Protect our public lands

Dear Senator Murkowski, I am writing to express my strong opposition to the provision in the U.S. Senate's recently released spending bill that would authorize the sale of up to 3.3 million acres of public lands across the American West. This includes areas surrounding or intersecting the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and the Continental Divide Trail (CDT)-both of which are designated National Scenic Trails and treasured national resources. While it may seem inconceivable that the federal government would consider selling lands encompassing such iconic trails, the vague language in this bill fails to explicitly exclude them. As a result, cherished landscapes relied upon by hikers, bikers, climbers, hunters, anglers, and other outdoor enthusiasts could be vulnerable to sale. Even more concerning is the process outlined in the bill, which would bypass long-standing safeguards. There would be no public hearings, no environmental review, and no opportunity for public comment. Final decisions would rest solely with the Secretaries of Agriculture and the Interior, eliminating congressional oversight and excluding the American people from decisions about their public lands. Not only will this impact the lives of Americans that enjoy the outdoors, but also animals and ecosystems will be severely impacted. I believe we need to fight to protect what really makes America great, and that is its natural beauty and biodiversity. Please don't let this bill pass and destroy our country.
