Repeal the Georgia Promise Scholarship (SB 233)

September 27

Repeal the Georgia Promise Scholarship (SB 233). Public tax dollars belong in public schools — not redirected to private institutions that can turn away the most vulnerable kids, including those with disabilities or those protected under Title IX. Voucher programs pull money from public schools every time a student leaves. Will school closures be the result? The students left behind aren't abstractions — they're kids sleeping in bathtubs, kids being raised by grandparents, kids from families who are struggling amid the current economic challenges, kids with special needs, kids for whom school is the one place they're fed, safe, and told they matter. Private voucher schools don't have to take those kids. Public schools do. Our public schools are one of the last places where people from all walks of life share a common identity and learn together. Public school funding is tied to enrollment. When students leave the public school system to attend voucher schools, public school enrollment decreases, thereby reducing funding. Draining their funding doesn't just hurt individual students — it weakens the civic foundation our democracy depends on. Please stop diverting public funds to private voucher schools in Georgia.
