As your constituent, I urge you to oppose the nomination of Daniel Traynor to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit. As a federal judge in the District of North Dakota, Traynor has a troubling record making extreme decisions that undermine reproductive freedom, LGBTQIA+ rights, and immigrant rights. His record shows that he has used his lifetime position on the federal bench to advance biased and partisan decisions that deviate from legal precedent. Traynor must not be allowed to impose his extremist agenda on the courts from a position as an appellate judge.
As a district court judge, Traynor has weakened workplace and health care protections for pregnant and LGBTQIA+ people through an expansive interpretation of religious freedom laws, explicitly stating that religious protections supersede all other rights. He has also issued outlier rulings that allowed for the detention of immigrants without appropriate due process. These rulings reflect an extreme ideological agenda, not a commitment to equal justice under the law.
A lifetime appointment to the 8th Circuit will impact millions of people across seven states in the Midwest and Great Plains for decades to come. Federal judges must demonstrate independence, integrity, and respect for civil and constitutional rights. Daniel Traynor’s record does not meet that standard, and I strongly urge you to oppose his confirmation.
