Extend TRUST Act Protections to Illinois Schools

To: Gov. Pritzker, Rep. Grant, Sen. Lewis

From: A constituent in Winfield, IL

November 1

The Illinois TRUST Act has been instrumental in limiting local law enforcement's cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, fostering trust within our immigrant communities. However, we must do more to protect our most vulnerable residents – our children. I urge you to introduce and support legislation that extends similar protections to our school districts, ensuring that education remains a safe space for all Illinois students, regardless of their immigration status. Currently, school districts in Illinois have varying policies regarding cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This inconsistency leaves many immigrant families in fear and uncertainty, potentially impacting student attendance and academic performance. By passing a state law that prohibits school districts from assisting ICE, we can create a uniform, statewide standard that prioritizes education and student well-being. The proposed legislation should explicitly prohibit school districts from inquiring about or sharing students' immigration status. It should also bar ICE agents from entering school property without a valid judicial warrant. These measures would align with the spirit of the TRUST Act and the Illinois Way Forward Act, creating a comprehensive approach to protecting immigrant communities across various sectors of public service. Implementing such legislation would have far-reaching benefits. It would ensure that all children, regardless of their immigration status, feel safe attending school and accessing educational resources. This sense of security is crucial for academic success and overall well-being. Moreover, it would reinforce Illinois' commitment to being a welcoming state that values diversity and protects its most vulnerable residents. The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated. Every day without these protections is a day when immigrant students and their families may live in fear, potentially impacting their education and future prospects. I ask that you prioritize this issue in the upcoming legislative session and work towards introducing a bill that extends TRUST Act-like protections to our schools. By taking this step, Illinois can once again lead the nation in progressive immigration policies that prioritize community trust, safety, and education. Let's ensure that our schools remain sanctuaries of learning for all students, free from the fear of immigration enforcement.
