Time to Rein in ICE
To: Rep. Joyce, Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted
From: A constituent in Concord Township, OH
May 12
Masked agents breaking into homes without warrants. A Fulbright scholar abducted for daring to publish an editorial. A mother torn from her breastfeeding infant. A 16-year-old’s face smashed into the pavement while ICE agents drag his parent away. These are not isolated incidents — they are part of a growing pattern of violence, secrecy, and impunity that defines today’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement. And now, the mayor of Newark has been arrested. Not for any act of violence, fraud, or corruption — but for "trespassing" outside a facility in his own city, where ICE is reportedly detaining people in an unsafe structure with no certificate of occupancy. Let that sink in: an elected mayor, arrested for doing his job and attempting to inspect an illegal detention site endangering human lives. What began as a law enforcement agency is now operating as a rogue force — targeting immigrants, activists, elected officials, and even U.S. citizens — with little to no oversight. ICE agents increasingly hide their identities, refuse to show warrants, and engage in brutal tactics that echo the very regimes from which asylum seekers flee. They act as if they answer to no one. So far, that assumption hasn’t been wrong. When will this stop? Do we wait until a member of Congress is arrested? Do we wait until someone is killed? We don’t have to. Congress has the power — and the responsibility — to rein in ICE. That means cutting its bloated funding, imposing strict accountability measures, demanding full transparency, and standing up for the constitutional rights that should apply to everyone within our borders, regardless of immigration status. And to be clear: this isn’t just about ICE. This is about what kind of country we are becoming. Are we a nation of laws and due process — or one where masked government agents operate with impunity? The answer to that question is being written right now. And silence from our elected officials is complicity. Those who turn a blind eye today will not be remembered as protectors of safety or law. They will be remembered as cowards — enablers of a system that terrorized the vulnerable and shredded the Constitution in broad daylight. We must stop the raids. End the lawless detentions. Restore oversight. Rein in ICE — now.
